Unsuspecting and trusting children
deserve a choice

"Well, we now have excellent evidence, for example, as published in the literature to show that on average people do live in fact 10 to 12 years longer who are consuming, you know, a vegan-like diet. That means no dairy, by the way." Dr. T. Colin Campbell PhD. read more

Silence is complicity, as is tolerance

“Fox River Grove Middle School is standing education on its head when it cracks down on instructors who teach our kids about kindness and good health,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “Mr. Warwak is exposing the meat industry’s dirty secrets, and his students have every right to know the truth behind their food choices.”

Indoctrination: to teach with a biased
or one-sided ideology.

School allows lunchroom to be turned into a Dairy Industry advertisement; teacher fired for turning his classroom into a “PETA” advertisement.

“I found it troubling and problematic that while Warwak was educating his students about the food that they eat and its effects on their health, the principal’s main concern was not about the well-being of his students but that there would be a backlash against the school’s lunch program” Aaron Finke

Humane Education makes the acquisition of relevant knowledge, skills, and commitment to living ethically, sustainably, and peaceably on this planet the very purpose of education. It is not a "personal choice" when you are eating my friends and you are ruining my world. When you made your "personal choice" did you ask the animal if you could confine, torture, and murder him or her? When you made your "personal choice" did you ask me if I mind all your pollution and devastation?  My tax money subsidizes your "personal choice." Just because we personally make selfish choices does not make them "personal choices."

Impressionable children are forced to go to school. Advertising of any kind in schools is immoral. Allow children all the information without being marketed to, so they can make their own decisions. A milk mustache on a sexy woman has nothing to do with reality – it is pure marketing.

"Not only at Fox River Grove Middle School but also in thousands of schools across the country, corporate agribusiness has run amok in the attempt to utilize public education as a place to establish the naturalization of commercial meat and dairy as lifelong eating habits, to generate increased sales, to subsidize the food industry against decreased producer prices, as well as to funnel below-health standards food not fit for public sale. Warwak was correct to demand the riddance of the Dairy Council’s posters as they had in fact already been targeted for removal from approximately 105,000 public schools by the Federal Trade Commission." This is not just about diet. Don't believe everything you see. The world is an illusion. Wake up. There are many things all around us made from animals that we never notice. We're so disconnected; we don't even notice this right in front of our face three times a day. When we open our circle of compassion to all, we grow as a people and our treatment of each other and others improves. It really is about peace, love, and compassion for all

It's a sad day/world

"It’s a sad day when a teacher is punished for telling students the truth: that by going vegetarian they will dramatically improve their health while saving animals from cruelty so extreme it would warrant felony-level cruelty charges in the state of Illinois if the victims were dogs and cats, rather than chickens, pigs, and cows. In a time of growing violence in schools, a teacher who is bringing a message of compassion should be applauded, not punished. Students in every school should have teachers like Mr. Warwak to tell them that the “chicken nuggets” they consume in the cafeteria were once living, breathing animals who were crammed into filthy sheds and pumped full of drugs before having their throats slit while still conscious.

Mr. Warwak was also apparently distributing copies of John Robbins’ book “The Food Revolution”, which documents not just the cruelty of the meat industry, but also the environmental and health benefits of a vegetarian diet. In these days of skyrocketing childhood obesity, hopefully Mr. Warwak’s students will take this health message to heart: according to the American Dietetic Association, a vegan diet is appropriate for all ages and vegans have lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity than meat-eaters" Bruce Friedrich, Vice President PETA

"When I heard that Dave Warwak was fired from Fox River Grove Middle School in Illinois for his attempts to teach Humane Education, I thought about Socrates who was executed thousands of years ago for his teachings. That ancient Greek philosopher was accused of “corrupting the youth.”

I thought how any attempt to teach the truth to youth seems always to be met with opposition and resistance by those who are really corrupt and want to keep the status quo at any cost.

Dave Warwak uses his sense of humor and his artistic talent to help make this a kinder and more gentle world. Isn’t this exactly what the world needs?"

Milk on Trial as Cornell Expert Testifies at Fired Teacher’s Hearing
By Martha Rosenberg

Chicago, IL
-- The life expectancy of National Football League players might have as much to do with teaching art as the factory farming fired middle school teacher Dave Warwak is accused of teaching.

But it formed the backbone of Cornell University Professor Emeritus Dr. T. Colin Campbell's testimony at the Board of Education hearing into the middle school teacher’s dismissal in Fox River Grove, IL, population 5,000, in April.

NFL players are only expected to live to 56 because "they are dying of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and diet related illnesses," testified Campbell in defense of Warwak’s classroom charge that animal foods will shorten lives. read more here

"Epidemiological models of infectious disease produce estimates ranging from less than one hundred (a level already broken) to tens of thousands or more, depending on the assumptions used by the modelers. The incubation period of vCJD in humans is not known, nor are the genetic and environmental risk factors that influence susceptibility, nor the quantity of infectious agent needed to cause the disease. It is estimated that between one and two million infected cattle have been eaten by humans, most in the earliest stages of the epidemic. Estimates cannot be based on the very few cases that have developed so far. These cases could represent the very few people with the right combination of exposure and susceptibility to a relatively fast-developing infection, or they could be the first few victims of a slower-acting, more highly infectious agent" Larry I. Lutwick, MD

Pamela Rice says ... “Warwak is an extremist, yes. But have vegans forgotten that everything around us is extremely horrible: animal cruelty in unfathomable numbers, a planet imploding because of animal agriculture, and a human health crisis? Why can’t vegans get uppity like every other constituency that is or ever was. Do people think that the meat world is going to just kick over and die one day? We vegans know the score. It’s up to us and no others to take a stand on these issues. We cannot count on meat eaters to see things the way we do… Warwak made a strong one stand. We vegans don’t know how to process it. Unfortunately, the kids are the ones most to suffer from today’s agriculture policies. Warwak gets it. As a teacher, he has to look into their eyes.” http://veggieprideparade.org

Fearful of losing respect/control, in that vegan students would have higher moral ground than their corpse-munching teachers, schools hide veganism from children. How embarrassing. And the poor decision making gets support at all levels including the schools’ administrations who view the USDA’s National School Lunch Program as a money maker. Often lunch sales/profits (from small schools who profit $100,000 to larger districts who crank in millions every year) do not get put back into the lunch program; but, are instead diverted to other line-items within their budgets - a source of income and something to take personal and protect at all costs.

It is really all about money - not about children. Children are next to last on the list, right before animals at the very bottom. read more

"We believe there would be no controversy if Mr. Warwak was talking about, let’s say, the Michael Vick case and the cruelty of dog fighting," Runkle said. "I think his case shows there’s a disconnect of what’s considered cruel for animals considered pets versus those meant for human consumption." read more

When people interfere with others ...

Cindy Pilz, of Fox River Grove, described Warwak as a likable person and talented artist who was popular among students in part because he treated them as equals. Pilz said, “But his curriculum on veganism was self-serving”.

Warwak says, “Veganism is about being respectful, responsible and caring of others and allowing children to have all sides of issues that matter to them most … about their own bodies and future survival on Earth---pertaining to have anything and everything to do with their lives … including veganism---and is not a self-serving agenda for a good teacher who cares about his world and has to look his students in the eyes everyday. Silence is complicity. My art curriculum’s highest goals are to show how artists shape and guide the values and morals of society. I showed this with the false (art) commercial advertising---the dairy industry’s Milk Mustache’ posters---shamelessly displayed in the student cafeteria.”

The real issue was---and still is---the school’s refusal to discuss these matters and their intentional crimes against humanity.

Veggie Pride Parade - Photo by Team Organic NYC “For the school board to claim that Dave Warwak turned his classroom into a "zone of indoctrination" is not only ironic, but ludicrous. It is clear that the entire school is a zone of indoctrination, complete with posters promoting dairy products and a cafeteria offering a continuous supply of foods derived from terrified and abused animals. The school and its teachers and administrators present this cruelty as normal in an overwhelmingly pervasive way to impressionable children. The school is itself an institution embedded in a culture that uses all its other institutions to do exactly the same thing. Dave Warwak was providing a small counterpoint of awareness, compassion, and sensitivity to this flood of indoctrination to which all children in our culture are routinely subjected and for this he could not be tolerated. That he should be painted by the school board and media as the "indoctrinator" is beyond absurd, and what is astonishing is how difficult this is for most people to comprehend. Dave Warwak was creative and honest in his efforts to help students rise above culturally-imposed attitudes of violence and cruelty toward animals, and because of this he was viewed as dangerous to the status quo. In actuality, he was fulfilling a higher mandate, and for this he deserves respect and honor, not the disrespect and abuse that he has been forced to endure for questioning a culture that is ferocious in its routine cruelty toward billions of animals used for food.” Dr. Will Tuttle PhD., author of The World Peace Diet

Persecuting Men of Vision

A book burning was held recently. Welcome to the new United States of Amerika, a place in which Homeland Security means protecting our children against subversive ideas such as the promotion of compassion to animals. Such as the vegetarian lifestyle.

A vegan teacher dared to distribute books by John Robbins to his students. Those books were joyously burned at a barbecue in which animals were roasted by members of an Illinois community. What was his crime?

Let me quote Mrs. Lovett in the Johnny Depp movie, Sweeney Todd, brilliantly directed by Tim Burton. When asked what crime a barber was prosecuted for and transported away for a life of hard labor in a ship’s galley, she responded, “His crime? Foolishness.”

In real-life 21t century terms, Dave Warwak’s middle school crime was to inspire his art students (just as Peter Max once did) that compassion to animals and people was a blessing and not a crime.

Dave’s website tells the story of his tormenting experience and firing by the school board: http://inslide.com

Vegan radio has an interesting perspective on Dave’s experiences. You can listen to that archived show: http://veganradio.com

Dave Warwak took the burdens of the world upon his own shoulders. Like many men of wisdom and courage throughout history who have been honored by those who are touched by greatness, Dave has been persecuted for society’s sins.

I cannot do anything other than compare Dave’s continuing struggle to Galileo.

Long ago, Galileo turned his attention to a new frontier, and in doing so, angered religious leaders. By placing lenses inside of a long tube, Galileo’s primitive telescope allowed him to discover four moons revolving around the planet Jupiter. His invention was destroyed and Galileo imprisoned. Man’s laws gave this fanatic and visionary two choices: remain in prison or recant his discovery and previous testimony. Galileo had no choice but to exist in a world in which his truth became a threat to the men of his time. Dispelling myths has always been dangerous to one’s health. Dave refuses to betray his values or his mission. Welcome this new vegan visionary into a movement badly in need of heroes.

Fox River Grove School District 3 claims no recalled meat was fed to children
By Craig A. Whitney

Former Fox River Grove Middle School art teacher Dave Warwak returned Monday to speak to his former employer about the food the district is serving to its students.

He also spoke about his termination last fall.

Last September, the School Board fired Warwak for allegedly teaching students about following a vegan diet during class time. Warwak is a vegan who avoids using animal products of any kind.

During the public comment segment of Monday’s Board of Education meeting, Warwak alleged that 384 pounds of meat contaminated with mad cow disease were fed to Fox River Grove Middle School students.

"It takes some 10 to 15 years for it to incubate -- the prion," Warwak said. "It latches onto a brain cell.

"This is serious stuff," he continued. "I tried warning you about it before. You didn't want to listen." read more

Dave Warwak’s campaign to teach his 8th-grade art students about the evils of an omnivorous lifestyle is officially over the top.

Warwak, who says he was removed from his McHenry County classroom last week by the “ardent meat eaters” who run Fox River Grove District 3, had predicted he would be fired at a Monday meeting with his bosses. That didn’t happen, but Warwak now says he won’t return to work unless the school cafeteria goes vegan, eliminating meat, milk and other “poisons” from the menu. And this from the beef industry: "Nutritional vegetarianism coverage also stemmed from attention to art teacher Dave Warwak espousing his views on veganism to students at Fox River Grove Middle School in Illinois. In a Chicago Tribune report about the dispute between the school and the teacher on the appropriateness of his conduct, Warwak argued, “It’s about health. It’s about living longer” (Sept. 7). In another Tribune report, the teacher said, “I can’t really see working there as long as those milk posters are up and they keep feeding poison to the kids” (Sept. 11). While news reports on the conflict in a nutritional context were generally negative as vegan/vegetarian activist comments were included more often, the Chicago Tribune issued favorable editorials Sept. 12 and 14 that were critical of Warwak and his attempts to indoctrinate the students.

Ethical vegetarianism maintained its position as the leading sub-issue for the September/October period, appearing in 45 percent of animal rights coverage. The sub-issue retained its prominence due to a dispute in early September between a vegan teacher and the administration and parents of students at Fox River Grove Middle School in Illinois. Art teacher Dave Warwak was accused of inappropriately using his position to promulgate his views on animal cruelty and veganism. Though coverage included a number of nutritional and ethical arguments for vegetarianism through Warwak’s supporters, reaction to the teacher in the media was negative, with a Chicago Tribune editorial calling his campaign “officially over the top” (Sept. 12).

Coverage about People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) increased again slightly in volume this period, in part due to mentions in the Warwak coverage." read more
